Super Trade  at the  Texel  Premier Sale
The Texel Premier Sale held on Saturday 11th of August at Blessington Mart in Co. Wicklow was described by John Doyle auctioneer in charge of the sale as a “flyer of a sale”. The sale had an 80% clearance across both ewes and rams. Both commercial and pedigree breeders were very plentiful at the sale with many commercial farmers buying 4/5 rams each.

The show was judged by Gordan Gray from Scotland and the Champion Ram of the sale was John Green’s (Larahirl Flock) from Culdaff, Co. Donegal. The ram lamb was a genotype 2 son of Glenside Lord of The Ring and sold for 4,500gns to Pat & Barry Farrell (Oberstown Flock), Tara Co. Meath. The Reserve Champion Ram was a genotype 1 son of Roughan Laptop shown by John & Colm McHugh (Greenhill Flock), Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan and went on to sell for 4,000gns to Mark Geoghegan (Newtown Flock), Newtowncunningham, Co. Donegal. The first prizewinning shearling ram, a son of Silver Hill King, shown by McKeague Brothers, Culdaff, Co. Donegal, sold for the top price on the day at 5,200gns to the Sire Reference Group Premier Irish Texels. 

Champion Ewe, a daughter of Top Hill Joe, was shown by John Kelly (Bothair Bui Flock), Ballina, Co. Mayo and sold for 1,800gns to Jeff Green. The Reserve Champion Ewe, a daughter of Cowal Maverick, was exhibited by a new breeder selling for the first time at the Premier Sale, Nicholas Byrne (Weststar Flock), Oughterard, Co. Galway, this ewe lamb sold for the top ewe price on the day at 3,000gns to Alistair Gault.

Some other high prices on the day included Padraic Niland’s (Chessy Flock), Kinvara, Co. Galway, 3rd prize winning genotype 1 ram lamb, son of Ballybrooney Maradona, selling for 4,200gns to John & Colm McHugh (Greenhill Flock), Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan.  Anne Murphy’s (Foundry Flock), Gorey, Co. Wexford 2nd prize winning genotype 1 ram lamb, son of Foundry Ketchup, selling to Premier Irish Texels for 4,000gns.  Ronan Gallagher’s (Enniscrone Flock), Enniscrone, Co. Sligo, 2nd prize winner in the open ram lamb class genotype 2 sold to Owen Donohoe for 3,000gns.  Eamon &Liam Walsh’s (Ballybrooney Flock), Ballina, Co. Mayo, 6th prize winner in the LMI class genotype 1 sold for 2,800gns to Paul Coyne (Miller Flock), Tuam, Co. Galway.  Ellen Bailey (Baileys Flock), Batterstown, Co. Meath, 6th prize winner in the open ram lamb class genotype 1 sold for 2,600gns to Sean Brennan (Lisgobbin Flock), Lisgobbin, Co. Roscommon.

Overall in the sale 26 sheep sold over 1,000gns, 60 ewes averaged €565, shearling rams averaged €605 and ram lambs averaged €875 and in total 207 sheep were sold.
