TatTooing and Earmarking in Registered Flocks
All lambs must be notched within 24 hours of birth for identification purposes
and subsequently be permanently tattooed prior to weaning. The method of Ear
Notching to identify the individual lambs is as shown in the diagram below:
Examples of Notching:
for 28 – notch a 20 in the Right ear and a ‘5’ and a ‘3’ in the Left ear.
for 107 – notch two 50’s at the bottom of the Right ear and a ‘5’ and a ‘2’ in the Left ear.
Each member is allocated an unique 3 letter registered flock code on joining the
Society. This flock code together with the relevant year number (for example
WKI8 for flock WKI and year 2008) is tattooed prior to weaning in the RIGHT ear
(see above diagram for right ear) of each sheep born in the breeder’s flock and which he/she thinks is likely to breed progeny worthy of the breed.
Instead of tattooing a particular number to identify each individual animal (as
was previously the case), each animal will now be identified by notching as is
demonstrated above.
